The GI-tagged Samba Vathal Chilly supports Virudhunagar’s economy, but poor seed quality and traditional practices limit productivity. Integrated interventions are essential to ensure sustainable growth and value chain strengthening.
This project aims to
01
Improve productivity of GI-tagged Samba Vathal Chilli
02
Enhance quality through use of certified seeds
03
Promote precision farming practices
04
Introduce climate-resilient cultivation methods
05
Strengthen scientific and sustainable farming systems
Key Interventions
- Supply of quality seeds for 2,000 acres for the next cropping season
- Establishment of a 1-acre shade net facility for seedling production
- Installation of drip irrigation, fertigation, and soil moisture sensors
- Training of 10 lead farmers and 250 progressive growers
- Establishing Scientific Seed Processing Unit
Expected outcome
- Brand and market 2,500 kg seeds annually
- Reduce early crop loss by 40–50%
- Cut water usage (20–25%) and fertilizer costs (~20%)
- Ensure uniform, disease-free seedlings for 100 acres
- Build self-reliant, revenue-generating FPOs
Testimonials
Earlier, we struggled with poor seed quality, low germination, and unstable yields. Farming Samba Vathal was always uncertain, and each season carried risk.
After joining this scheme, everything changed. We received certified GI seeds, healthy nursery-raised seedlings, drip irrigation support, and continuous guidance through our FPO.
Today, our seed germination has improved to over 90%. We use less water, manage pests more effectively, and follow better farming practices. My yield has increased by around 15%, and my income per acre has improved significantly. Most importantly, we now have trust in the quality of locally produced certified seeds.
This project has not only reduced our costs but also increased our confidence. It has given us stability and is helping protect the future of our traditional Samba Vathal chilli for the next generation.
